Florida Spring Wekiva History.

The history of this park is very old. The First Nations, Creeks, or Seminoles, were the first people to enjoy this amazing place and live here, because they called it Wekiva, which means “flowing water” in the Creek language. In 1860, after the domain of the “white man”, the place had one owner.

Because of its natural attributes, many people began to flock to the area, and in 1890, he constructed structures for receptive tourism, including hotels and bathhouse complexes.

The spring of Wekiva 70 years before Walt Disney World became the first tourist attraction in Florida. In 1941, the Apopka Sportsman Club bought the area and started to explore hunting and fishing activities.

The state of Florida bought the area in 1969 and turned it into Wekiva Spring State Park. From very early times, the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System was created by Congress in 1968, and they created laws and procedures to protect it and other lands for future generations. Thank you for all your efforts in preserving nature, more than ever.
